The dogs at this shelter are mostly strays who were abandoned by their owners and found along the road or in the ‘Mondi’ because they couldn’t afford to feed them anymore. Tourists who see stray dogs with poor health often have a negative impression of the island. That is why we are building a Dog Shelter that provides proper care and also sterilization for the dogs, after which an appropriate owner can be found.

Dulce Bonifacio’s planned Playa Canoa Dog Shelter in Curacao is still in progress. Having taken in approximately 100 stray dogs at her residence, Ms. Bonifacio has sought to create a dog shelter in which the animals can reside with more space and improved care. The facility and the Ministry of VVRP have been in negotiations for an extended period as they are assessing the suitability of the project’s location.Unfortunately, the process has taken longer than anticipated. Dulce has consulted legal counsel and has obtained the necessary documentation that she wants to move forward with the project.
The groundwork for the establishment of a dog shelter at Playa Canoa has already been established, and now it is a question of obtaining the necessary permits to ensure stray dogs have a comfortable environment to receive the care they need. The Animal are our Friends Foundation would be grateful for any contribution to our cause, and appreciate your support in this endeavour.

This needs to be easy to maintain and repair. It’s designed to keep the dogs in the area where they belong. The fence is built around the perimeter of the property, and then the fence is closed by a bus that has been cut open and provides shade during the midday heat.
We are waiting on a gift in the form of a fence that will surround the dog runs. Together with volunteers we can paint the dog houses and modify the busses, if we could get some building materials together we can finish everything in a couple of weekends.
If someone wants to help with an installation of solar panels plus a battery for a discounted price let us know. This requires some funds. We have saved up some for the move / renovation, but that is not enough to make this purchase and saving on maintenance of the dogs and sterilization is not an option we need more help from our sponsors.
